| US SOCOM MARSOC MRTC | IST | IST within Operational Psychology for Assessment and Selection of Personnel: A number of Special Operations programs takes a unique individual. Applicants come from all walks of life, but not all that apply are selected to train to be part of these unique organizations. One might wonder how America selects "the best of the best". Assessment and Selection programs typically require a grueling physical and psychological assessment that can be demanding on even the most physically fit and mentally resilient individuals. This overview addresses some of the needs, solutions, and capability of our program's Assessment and Selection Program from within the scope of Operational Psychology. Additional information on Assessment and Selection can be found here. Most psychological assessments, screenings, and tools are parsed out into many different modes of delivery. Some tests are administered online, others on a bubble-sheet, while others are simply "Pencil and Paper". All these psychological data-points, along with various course elements, can be overwhelming for an organization to assess manually, given the large number of applicants. Manually viewing each item of interpretive data, to later synthesize a complete hypothesis for a command board, can prove detrimental for a psychologist that is evaluating a candidate if they do not have adequate time to see the whole profile of an individual. The Operational Psychologist and the Analyst(s) within our organization have developed novel Information Science tools to assist with data collection and analysis. The Psych staff were able to develop these tools with only the technology readily available to them via enterprise solutions such as Microsoft Access, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro and manipulation and use of programming languages such as JavaScript for the Adobe API and Virtual Basic for Applications for advanced coding for functions and subroutines for queries, reports and updates. These tools provide structure to isolated data points and create consolidated, well informed, predictive information, and analytics based off of historical means of Special Operations candidates and graduates within our program. The transformation of most "Pencil and Paper" forms, exports of testing, and the creation of a relational database allows for the collected data to be consolidated so the Psychologist can run statistics and predictive analytics. Those analytics are then generated into concise reports provided to the psychological team with the intent to better enhance the assessment of each candidate. The time saving analytics allow the psychologist to more accurately provide the organization a psychological recommendation for potential candidates, based on suitability. Similar Assessment and Selection programs within the DoD have taken notice and have begun consulting with our organizations to make their selection programs better. The fundamentals of Information Sciences and Technology are apparent, where this program goes in the next 5 years with the technology as it continues to develop, knows no bounds. The evolution of predictive and explanatory analytics is just being explored. "The sky's the limit". Key Take Always: I currently work as a behavioral analyst and do a number of IST related services currently. Some of the work I do includes: SharePoint administration/design, Adobe workflows, elaborate JavaScripting for PDF forms and data collection, Relational database Management, and Text Analytics/ Data Visualizations. I am currently applying IST skills and concepts heavily within my current field. Skills from IST 210, 220 and 250 are heavily utilized to name a few.... There is a lot of overlap in Statistics, Data Science, and Behavioral Sciences we are also applying, but that is to the nature of the job as our organization grows we have had to evolve as our selection program advances.
