| UChicago Argonne, LLC | SSS Research Aid Technical | CYAOP | This summer, 2023, I (Anastasia Gregule) will be interning at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL. Argonne is a Department of Energy lab and I will be working in the Strategic Security Sciences (S3) division, specifically within the Nonproliferation department. The department’s mission is to combine technical expertise in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) science and engineering with specialized knowledge of nonproliferation policies and programs to develop practical approaches and technical solutions in achieving nonproliferation objectives. The missions include CBRN Nonproliferation, International Nuclear Safeguards, Export Controls, Arms Control Verification, IAEA Programs, and Protecting Emerging Technologies. My position title is SSS Student Intern. My full-time hours for my one summer 2023 semester began on May 3rd, 2023, and will end on August 17th, 2023. I will be working 40 hours a week for each week within this time frame. Regarding my major, my work in S3 often overlaps with the S3 Cybersecurity department and the division of Decision and Infrastructure Sciences (DIS) departments that focus on decision science, systems engineering and integration, infrastructure systems modeling, security and resilience analysis, emergency preparedness, response, and recovery, threat and intelligence analysis, risk analysis, social and behavioral sciences. All the departments and divisions I collaborate with perfectly encompass my courses at PSU, specifically the Security Risk Courses that have taught me most of the analytical and writing skills I use daily at work. In my daily reporting, I report cyber attacks that occur specifically threaten hospitals that hold radiological or nuclear materials since these materials pose a great risk to the security and safety of the public. Analysis and decision-making skills are crucial in my position and streamlining data processing software through programming has put much of my IST course experience to use. Overall, all courses at PSU have aided and prepared me for my position at Argonne and allowed me to feel like an asset to my team. During the school year, I have worked part-time for Argonne but over the summer I will be working full-time hours. This is reflected in the employment verification documents.
