Penn State Police and Public Safety | SRA | IAM | As Emergency Phones supervisor, I am responsible for ensuring that the Auxiliary Police Unit fulfills its responsibility of testing Emergency phones on campus. This involves keeping track of which phones need to be checked, dividing them up into areas that can be managed by one Auxiliary Officer (AO) during a three-hour shift, creating phone check forms and compiling completed phone check forms in a weekly email, which is sent to the Auxiliary Police Coordinator. In addition to these routine functions, I will also be creating a new standard operating procedure for Emergency Phones shifts and maps of where the phones are located. As probation exams supervisor, I am responsible for maintaining an up-to-date probation exam and ensuring that all AOs take the probation exam before they have completed 100 hours of work. In addition to these supervisory roles, I also assist the hiring team in conducting interviews of candidates for employment. Based on the interview, I am able to recommend or not recommend candidates for employment. Several of these positions involve the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Access databases. In addition to these specific activities, I also have shifts as Duty Supervisor and Event Supervisor. As Duty Supervisor, I am responsible for all AOs working overnight shifts. These shifts include patrolling residence hall areas and checking card-access doors on residence halls, in addition lockup of academic buildings and other security and traffic shifts that do not have a dedicated supervisor. One of my responsibilities as Duty Supervisor is reviewing access card swipes from previous shifts to ensure that AOs are checking all doors and moving through residence hall quads in the time frames they are expected to. This is done using the access control system that tracks card swipes for access to all residence halls. As event supervisor, I am responsible for assigning AOs to traffic and security posts, briefing officers on the nature of the event and what they are expected to do, and acquiring all equipment needed. For most events, we work inbound traffic, then security inside (during the event), then outbound traffic. As a result, it is the supervisor's responsibility to decide when to close roads, when to re-open them, and when to move from security to outbound traffic. This requires being aware of vehicle and pedestrian traffic for the entire traffic pattern, in addition to being aware of the time it takes to get all officers in position. In addition to these responsibilities, this job requires an awareness of the needs of both our customers (Intercollegiate Athletics, Residence Life, etc.) and of individual AOs in order to provide the best possible service to our customers and the public. This position requires the ability to communicate in a clear and professional manner, via email, phone, radio, and in person, with managers, subordinates, and the public. It requires me to be aware of policies and procedures within the police department and for the entire university. Finally, it requires to ability to deal with angry members of the public and with emergency situations in a calm and professional manner. The Auxiliary Police works out of the University Park police station, and answers directly to sworn police officers, so this position gives me experience working within a professional law enforcement agency. As a result of my experience so far, I have identified law enforcement as a potential career path, and this job has given me skills, such as professional communication and time management, that can be transferred to a career in any professional organization. |

Dr. Alison Murphy | IST | ISPP | Task 1: Redesign the IdeaMakers Website: Based on preliminary feedback from students, the website is not very user friendly and students have a difficult time trying to find the information that they need. The student intern would be responsible for running a usability study on the website, summarizing the results, and proposing recommended changes to the design. The student would also be expected to design the new website by May 2019. Task 2: Create a Startup Week Speaker Database: The Startup Week team needs a centralized database to store information about the annual speakers (name, contact info, years invited, years accepted, class/professor placement, etc.). At this time, the speaker list exceeds 150 people and the information is stored across multiple committee members’ mailboxes, spreadsheets, and other informal documentation. This makes it very difficult to find historical data on our speakers. It also leads to extra time being spent finding the same information each year. The student intern would be responsible for creating the database structure and populating the database with the existing speaker information by May 2019. |
