| US SOCOM MARSOC MRTC | IST | IST within Operational Psychology for Assessment and Selection of Personnel: A number of Special Operations programs takes a unique individual. Applicants come from all walks of life, but not all that apply are selected to train to be part of these unique organizations. One might wonder how America selects "the best of the best". Assessment and Selection programs typically require a grueling physical and psychological assessment that can be demanding on even the most physically fit and mentally resilient individuals. This overview addresses some of the needs, solutions, and capability of our program's Assessment and Selection Program from within the scope of Operational Psychology. Additional information on Assessment and Selection can be found here. Most psychological assessments, screenings, and tools are parsed out into many different modes of delivery. Some tests are administered online, others on a bubble-sheet, while others are simply "Pencil and Paper". All these psychological data-points, along with various course elements, can be overwhelming for an organization to assess manually, given the large number of applicants. Manually viewing each item of interpretive data, to later synthesize a complete hypothesis for a command board, can prove detrimental for a psychologist that is evaluating a candidate if they do not have adequate time to see the whole profile of an individual. The Operational Psychologist and the Analyst(s) within our organization have developed novel Information Science tools to assist with data collection and analysis. The Psych staff were able to develop these tools with only the technology readily available to them via enterprise solutions such as Microsoft Access, SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro and manipulation and use of programming languages such as JavaScript for the Adobe API and Virtual Basic for Applications for advanced coding for functions and subroutines for queries, reports and updates. These tools provide structure to isolated data points and create consolidated, well informed, predictive information, and analytics based off of historical means of Special Operations candidates and graduates within our program. The transformation of most "Pencil and Paper" forms, exports of testing, and the creation of a relational database allows for the collected data to be consolidated so the Psychologist can run statistics and predictive analytics. Those analytics are then generated into concise reports provided to the psychological team with the intent to better enhance the assessment of each candidate. The time saving analytics allow the psychologist to more accurately provide the organization a psychological recommendation for potential candidates, based on suitability. The fundamentals of Information Sciences and Technology are apparent, where this program goes in the next 5 years with the technology as it continues to develop, knows no bounds. | Assurant Solutions | SRA | Below are the detail of the project and what I plan to include in my discussion. This project will involve data analytics, programming(VBA), and advanced excel report. We have many different customers and programs at Assurant, as I mention T-Mobile is our biggest. We have the following 4 programs for T-Mobile Candidate Devices: T-Mobile AU/JUMP Program – The AU (Anytime Upgrade)/JUMP program is the one you see advertised on TV all the time. Customers enter an agreement and pay a monthly fee so they can sell their existing phone for an upgrade at any time. The phone then comes to our facility to be refurbished. T-Mobile DRP Program – The DRP (Device Recovery Program) come into play when a customer who is not currently enrolled in the JUMP program or who has another carrier (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon) want to enroll in the JUMP program. T-Mobile then purchases their phone from them and sends them to us to be refurbished or liquidated. T-Mobile MHP/PHP Insurance Program – The MHP/PHP (Mobile Handset Protection/Premium Handset protection) Insurance program is your typical insurance program. Customers make a claim and send their device in to be refurbished or replaced depending on the damage done. T-Mobile Green Program – The Green Program is for customer who want to recycle old devices. T-Mobile provides recycling containers at their stores so customers can dispose of phones properly without worrying about their person information being stolen. We have raw data inventory reports for each of these programs that are automatically generated each morning (see attached RPT_AU_STATUS_REPORT_YTD 2018_01_25). Currently our planning team is taking this raw data and creating reports that help our management team track inventory and dollar amounts for each of these programs every morning, the entire process takes around and hour each day (see attached JUMP Reports 01-25-2018). I recorded my screen using powerpoint as I complete one of the four reports so you can see what goes into creating the report. I chose the JUMP report because it is a little smaller then other and the data files are not as large, it also is a little faster to create. My task for this project is to code VBA Macros to run these reports so they are available earlier in the morning and save time for our planning team. Since each raw data report is a little different I will essentially need to do this for all four reports. I plan to make the modules within the macro adaptable so that if/when other programs come along we can easily replicate similar report macros for the new programs. VBA is new language to me so much of what I will be doing will be learning on the fly. When this project concludes our planning team will be able to run one macro that will create all four reports in just a small fraction of the normal time it takes to create them. |
